 We’ll Pressure Nigeria To Reverse The Law – United States

The United States government has vowed to continue to press the Nigerian government to reverse its anti-g*y law.

The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said this during a live-web chat with journalists in Washington. Our correspondent monitored the web chat in Abuja.
Thomas-Greenfield also said that America was not bothered that Chinese companies were fast taking over the African market from their US counterparts.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on January 7, 2014 assented to the Same s*x Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 which criminalises homosexuality in the country.
On January 14 when it became public that the President had signed the bill into law, the US, Canada and the European Union openly expressed reservations over the law.
Thomas-Greenfield, who said the US had adopted the protection of the rights of same-s*x people as part of its foreign policies, vowed that Washington would continue to mount and sustain pressure on Nigeria and other countries to reverse their laws against the l*****n, g*y, Bisexual, and Transgender community.
She said, “As a government, it is one of the highest priorities and strongest values that discrimination against anyone based on their sexual orientation and gender identity is wrong. We believe human rights should be available to everybody.
“As a policy, we will continue to press the government of Nigeria as well as other governments who have provided legislation that discriminate against the LGBT community.”
Thomas-Greenfiled, who did not agree that pressuring Nigeria to reverse the anti-g*y law amounted to interference, said the country and Uganda had the hardest legislation on the g*y community.
She said, “This is very much a work in progress, but I think you will agree with me that the law in Nigeria really went far in discriminating against this community but also people who associate with them.
“So we will continue to press the government, to press the legislature to change these laws and provide human rights for all Nigerian people regardless of their sexual orientation.”
She, however, did not disclose if the US would impose sanctions on the countries with anti-g*y laws to achieve its objectives.
Thomas-Greenfield was optimistic that the U.S would win the fight to protect the LGBT community.
She said, “With what is happening in the US, you can determine how far we are willing to go. We strongly believe human rights for all people and we are particularly opposed to legislation that actually targets the g*y community for discrimination. So we are prepared to push this as a policy not just in Africa but across the world.”

More than Three Nigerian dailies have reported on the apparent use of helicopters by terrorists operating in the burning north of Nigeria. A March 18th article in Tribune, a March 23rd article in THISDAY, a March 21st DailyTrust report of a Senate hearing in which Senator Abu Ibrahim detailed the use of helicopters to drop supplies and attackers to attack Katsina; and another March 25th investigative report in DailyTrust all presented shocking details of how helicopters have allegedly been used to ferry terrorists and ammunitions in the recent terror incidents in the north, the attack on 21 Armoured Brigade, Giwa barracks precisely and the massacres in Katsina.
In these cases, helicopters are described to have been seen by locals hovering above prior to the attacks and dropping materials and reinforcements in thick forests. DailyTrust queried Nigeria’s Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, about the possibility of such unnoticed air flight, despite the acquirement of 60 million Euros worth of modern equipment by the agency, its Terminal radar Approach Control of Nigeria (TRACON) which has enabled it completely cover the Nigerian air space.
According to aviation experts, it is basically impossible for unknown choppers to fly in Nigerian air spaces without being detected by government radars; this raises serious questions.

RAPE AND MEDICAL CARE

The incidence of rape in Nigeria and worldwide has been on the increase! What could be wrong with the modern society? There is epidemic of rape, hence the need for continuous health education.

‘How are the mighty fallen!’ is a popular biblical saying. The mighty are really falling daily, as respected men in the society have been implicated in one rape issue or the other.

From monarch to physician, musician, clergy, imam, teacher, father, and men who are role models in the society — they have all been implicated in the past few weeks.

The physician’s responsibilities in an alleged rape involve the following: documentation of events/medical history, careful physical examination, prompt treatment of physical injuries, psychological support and arrangements for follow-up counseling; collection of legal evidence, prevention of venereal disease and prevention of pregnancy, if desired by the patient.

Examination

After assisting the patient to become as comfortable as possible, a meticulous physical examination should be performed. The purpose of the examination is to assess and treat physical injuries, as well as collect evidence that could be submitted in court proceedings.

Evidence not collected within 48 to 72 hours of the incident is likely to be invalid.

 All of the victim’s clothes should be sent to a crime laboratory in carefully labeled and sealed bags.

The patient should be evaluated for abrasions, bruises and lacerations and extra-genital trauma to the mouth, throat, wrists, arms, breasts and thighs.

The vaginal examination should be performed with a speculum. After noting the condition of the hymen, the vaginal walls and cervix should be examined for lacerations or abrasions.

Vaginal secretions should be aspirated or collected on cotton swabs.

Medical implication

Pregnancy: Pregnancy as a result of rape occurs in about five per cent of fertile female victims. Preexisting pregnancy should be determined, preferably by a blood pregnancy test, and treatment for the prevention of pregnancy should be offered to the patient.

All post coital pregnancy interventions are effective within the first 72 hours of the act.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases are the responsibility of the physician. Baseline Hepatitis B Virus and Syphilis serology should be determined at the time of the examination, and the test should be repeated three months after the sexual contact.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) testing is controversial and should be discussed with the patient. If the patient desires testing and baseline results are negative, repeat testing is recommended in three to six months.

Laboratory testing

Testing for Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, Hepatitis B and HIV is recommended.

The remaining vaginal aspirate should be sent to a forensic laboratory to determine the presence of acid phosphatase. The presence of acid phosphatase is a good indicator of recent coitus.

Cultures for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis should be obtained from the cervix, rectum or mouth, based on the assault history.

Follow-up care

It is recommended that you have a follow-up visit with a health care provider within two weeks of the assault, then monthly for three to six months. During this visit, you can have follow-up testing, get treatment if needed, and discuss how you are recovering.

Testing for gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginosis may be recommended after the assault if you did not take preventive treatments at the initial evaluation.

Testing for pregnancy is recommended four weeks after the initial examination if you took an emergency contraceptive pill.

Testing for HIV is usually repeated at six weeks, three months and six months after the assault. This schedule of testing is recommended because, in some cases, it takes up to six months for the blood test to become positive.

The victim may know, or even live or work with a person who sexually assaulted them. It is essential that rape victims get help to find an environment where they feel safe after the attack.

Prevention

To stem the tide, non-governmental organisations, women affairs and social welfare departments at the federal, state and local government levels must commence enlightenment campaigns to alert parents and their children to this crime and how to avoid/prevent being violated

Parents also have to spend more time with their children, be closer to them and teach them about sex education early in life

The campaign should be intense and sustained; it should warn prospective offenders that severe punishment awaits them

In conclusion, rape is both a legal and medical term; hence readers are encouraged to seek knowledge about the legal aspects of rape.

Pastor arraigned for allegedly defrauding church member

Pastor Ikechukwu Ezeiru

The Pastor of Christ Citizen Glorious Assembly, Okota, Lagos, Pastor Ikechukwu Ezeiru, has been charged with fraud at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court.

He was arraigned on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a church member, Ifeanyi Ohazurume, of N7m.

The police said Ezeiru collected the money to help the defendant purchase auction goods from the Nigerian Customs Service.

He allegedly didn’t return the money or the goods.

It was learnt that the pastor claimed to have given the money to his wife, who equally claimed to have passed it to someone else.

He was arraigned on three counts of obtaining under false pretences and stealing.

The charge reads in part, “That you, Pastor Ikechukwu Ezeiru, and others at large, sometime in the month of February, 2012, at about 10.00hours at First Bank Plc, Okota branch, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial

District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: obtaining property by false pretences and stealing.

“That you on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district, did obtain the sum of N7m from one Ifeanyi Ohazurume, under the pretext that you are in position to help him buy auction goods from Nigerian Customs Service, a representation you knew to be false.”

The police prosecutor, George Nwosu, who represented the resident prosecutor, DSP Etim Ekankuk, said the offences were punishable under sections 409 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.

The defence counsel, Razak Adeyemi, applied for his bail in liberal terms.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Demi Ajayi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till April 16, 2014.

Late top music producer Harold Obiajulu Mordi a.k.a H-Code, who died on Friday March 7th after suffering an asthma attack, will be laid to rest tomorrow Wednesday, March 19.
Funeral service will hold at Lagoon Restaurant, Ozumba Mbadiwe, V.I Lagos, at 10:00 am and internment follows immediately at Victoria Courts Cemetry, Awoyaya after Mayfair Gardens in Lagos.
Harold Obiajulu Mordiwas born into the family of  Chief & Chief Mrs Francis Chukwuma Mordi on the 17th of May, 1986 at the First Consultant Hospital in Lagos. He attended the St Catherine’s Model Catholic School Yaba for his Nursery and Primary Education and then went onto Redeemers International Secondary School Maryland, Lagos where he completed his Secondary Education.
In 2004 while concluding his final year of Secondary Education; himself, his older sister Matilda and his first cousin Dele Jabar formed a music group called the FUDIES, their first album was produced by ID Cabasa, that was the beginning of his musical career, he then became so passionate about making music.
He furthered his education by gaining a diploma in Multi Media & Animation Technology at Aptech Worldwide Education (Meridien Technologies) and soon began working with different media houses, including Nigezie. He registered and began running one of his businesses HCODE MULTIMEDIA a brand well-known for Montage Production, Video and 3D Production as well as Sound/Music production and he was privileged to work with many brands, government parastatals, schools/institutions, organizations and churches to create unique multi-media  and 3D commercials, montages and documentaries.
Harold Obiajulu Mordi also popularly known as HCode founded his other businesses before he turned 24, EARWAXX STUDIOS (A world class Multi-Media recording studio where he produced several musical tracks, music videos and photography shoots) and MORDI RECORDS (a record label dedicated to supporting upcoming acts).  Harold impacted a lot of lives with his humility, genius and creative talent, he was very supportive of young and upcoming musical artistes and this inspired him till his departure.
From the age of 7 Harold began to display a distinguishable gift and business acumen, driven to succeed, Harold was extremely courageous and without argument extremely gifted. He was given to making financial investments from the age of 17. He was intelligent and proved over and over to be wiser than his years. He pursued his dreams earnestly and was successful in many regards. Hardworking, Respectful and Honest Harry was an inspiration and friend to many.
Harold was a born again and baptized believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, and was privileged to work in the creation of TV Commercials and Montages for his Local Church Covenant Christian Center. Though Harold had dealt with his asthma for most of his life, through the mercy of God; the support and love of his family, he overcame many asthmatic attacks and achieved many great things in his 27 years. Up until his death he ran his businesses HCode Multimedia Studios, Mordi Records and Earwaxx Studios successfully.
On the night of March 7th 2014, Harold ObiajuluMordi passed on in the company of his Mother, Sister Matilda, Close Friend Adegbenga Agoro and prodigeeTejumola 'Teejay' Osibanjo
He is survived by his Mother, Brothers, Sisters, Nieces and Nephews, In-Laws, & very close friends. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed, his legacy will surely live on.
May his soul continue to rest in peace. Amen.

Chris Brown Ordered to Remain in Jail

On Monday, Chris Brown was ordered to remain in jail until a hearing in late April because he got into trouble in a court-mandated rehab program.

Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin said that he was troubled by comments that the singer, 24, made during his rehab stay.

Before the hearing, Brown had been in the city's Men's Central Jail since March 14, when sheriff's deputies arrested him at a Malibu rehab for violating the facility's rules.

A report from the rehab facility says that Brown, on Friday morning, repeatedly got out of line – initially disregarding a request for a drug test, standing close enough to a female client that their elbows and hands touched, and mocking the program during a "morning reflections" session.
